Desire, Defiance, and the Shadows Within

In 1997, playwright Polly Teale reimagined Jane Eyre for Shared Experience Theatre, crafting a daring interpretation that strips away the surface to reveal the storm beneath Charlotte Brontë’s classic. This adaptation plunges deep into Jane’s inner world, unearthing the psychological battles between passion and restraint, duty and desire.

Bertha Mason — the infamous “madwoman in the attic” — is no longer confined to the shadows, but emerges as the living embodiment of Jane’s suppressed longings and rage. Through a bold fusion of realism and expressionism, Teale transforms the stage into a landscape of the soul, where the unspoken becomes startlingly visible.

Visually arresting and emotionally charged, this adaptation breathes raw, urgent life into one of literature’s most enduring heroines — a Jane Eyre you’ve never seen before.

This is Brighton Little Theatre’s 800th production since it started in June 1940! BLT have a long history of performing in the open air, having previously performed at Lewes Castle, The Minack Theatre, St. Ann Well’s Gardens and The Royal Spa, Queens Park. They have twice won The Minack Trophy for Best Production. They first performed at BOAT in July 2015 and were the third ever production at the venue.

The Brighton Little Theatre run, as part of the Brighton Fringe, received an “Outstanding Show” review from Fringe Review UK – “Most of all though this is a heart-stopping production. The sinewy and sensuous storytelling, the new elements as Jane and Bertha encircle each other, take the strange to the eerie: a sisterhood of repressed desire released into another life, a doppelganger where one must die. It’s Bertha’s tragedy as well as Jane’s triumph. Teale has released the daemons, but Sheridan’s ensemble has delivered Jane Eyre’s feeling to a pitch remarkable even for BLT.
